Ink & Paper Series
It may be stretch to call these “collages” as there are only two elements in each piece, but I’m not sure what else to call them. And they do feel like collages to me, because what’s interesting about them is how the ink drawings interact with the printed book pages - which are printed to look like they’re handwritten (I’ve blogged about the source book here). Collage is about the collapsing of edges, and unexpected neighbors. To play in that pool, you really only need two elements, and I sometimes think that it’s an easier game to play, the more elements you add. Practising constraint is hard, but worthwhile.
These also feel like collages to me because I didn’t plan them as much as I stumbled into them. I drew the first vase for no other reason than to draw it. It was only months later, after I realised that it fit inside a gesso rectangle I’d cut into an old page, that I realised I might have a series on my hands.
