All maps are lies.
Or, no maps tell the whole truth. Maps tell stories, which are parts of truths and never objective. Every map maker decides what to leave in and what to leave out, even when the map maker is “the algorithm” overlaying traffic data and street view photographs over objective-seeming renderings of streets and buildings.
Some maps are meant to serve stories, like Tolkien’s maps of Middle Earth. Other maps are meant to tell us how to get from A to B, but don’t care about what we’re passing on the way, like most maps we look at on our phones.
Maps are political, and borders change depending on what country it was made in. Maps are personal, defining paths through our lives.
Every time we make a map, we write a new story.
Mixed Media Collage: Linocut print, found paper, ink.
Note: Collage is sold matted but not framed.
The matted collage measures 300mm x 300mm, which is a standard frame size. Pictured frame is from gerstaecker.de.
